You can take a tour of the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing (established in 1862) and see money being printed. All U.S. currency is produced using the intaglio method. What does this mean?

With the intaglio method an engraved design is sunk below the surface of the canvas. The completed, hardened engraving is then transferred on to a soft transfer roll which is used again and again to duplicate the original.

The Bureau uses so much ink it is delivered in 55-gallon drums. Coins are manufactured at the various U.S. mints.
