How You Can Find New Topics for Hubs
“How do you get ideas or find topics?
How do you think of new subjects to write about in Hubpages?”
That was the question I was asked which is not as simple as it seems. Here is my answer which is slightly more complicated. I have discovered by reading many, many Hubs that Hubbers appear to fall into two categories: those who write authoritatively from experience and/or background about topics they are either familiar with, or are interested in and have researched to some or great extent. And those who write authoritatively about topics they are not very familiar with and couldn’t care less about substantiation of facts.
So you can see that the process for finding new topics and subjects is wide open. Just about anything goes. Wait a minute. There is also a third category. Some hubbers enjoy writing reviews about products, movies, books, whatever. and these hubs may be the easiest to monetize with Adsense and eBay. (Aha! There’s the subject for a new hub)!
Three Methods
Okay. Back to the subject of ideas for new topics. There are three methods I use. First method - I try to write about subjects I have some familiarity with like personality preferences, job search interviewing, dealing with difficult people, public speaking, managing anger; increasing traffic to hubs, etc.
Second method - I also write about subjects that intrigue me that I am not as familiar with but after sometimes exhaustive research, feel comfortable writing about - like weird animals, dumb, crazy laws; doughnuts (familiarity by ingestion prior to research); worldwide obesity; famous quotations, and tributes to well-known humorists.
Third method - this is the most circuitous of all since it involves reading or hearing something which triggers an idea for a hub which triggers research, which triggers another idea, which often leads to that “aha!” moment where you say to yourself: "This is the subject I will write about." The easiest way to illustrate this third and often most interesting method for the writer is to explain exactly how I came to create THIS hub.
You read the title, “How to Find New Topics for Hubs.” But that is not the first idea I had as a subject to write about. Here is how it all began. This morning I received an email in my personal account from an acquaintance and I will quote it here verbatim so you can follow my trend of thought – which is often baffling even to me.
The actual email
“To commemorate her 70th birthday, actress Julie Andrews recently made a special appearance at Manhattan’s Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of AARP (American Association of Retired Persons). One of the musical numbers she performed was “My Favorite Things'” from the legendary movie, “The Sound Of Music,” Here are the special lyrics she used:
‘Botox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Cadillacs and cataracts, hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things.
When the pipes leak, When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad.
Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things..
Back pain, confused brains and no need for sinnin',
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin',
And we won't mention our short shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite things.
When the joints ache, When the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I've had,
And then I don't feel so bad.’
Ms. Andrews received a standing ovation from the crowd that lasted over four minutes.”
My first idea for a hub.
Wow! What a clever parody. Think I’ll try to write a hub around it. But wait. The facts are wrong. #1 – I ”googled” Julie Andrews and learned she was born October 1, 1935 which would make her 75 on her birthday later this year, not 70 as the email proclaims.
#2 – I know that Julie Andrews lost her ability to sing after a botched surgery to remove a growth on her vocal cords. (In 2000, she subsequently sued the hospital and the two doctors involved and won her case and a settlement). She did a bit of “speaking-singing” in the 2004 film, “The Royal Engagement,” but admits in an interview that “ … the song was pitched very low for me; I wish I could call it singing. I don’t want to mislead anyone.”
So I did some more research and learned that this email with its song parody is considered an urban legend that has been around since April of 2001, and for nine years now Ms. Andrews vehemently denies ever singing it.
My second idea.
If I'm not going to write a hub on the parody, I thought, "Why not do a hub on Julie Andrews?" So I conducted even more research on Julie and learned that back in the 1970s, she was a guest star on The Muppet Show. Why not include the video of her performance in my incipient "All About Andrews" hub? Take a look for yourself.
Julie Andrews guest stars on The Muppet Show singing “The Lonely Goatherd” during Season Two (1977-1978).
Julie Andrews singing "The Lonely Goatherd"
My third idea
It was so much fun to watch that video, I got carried away and thought why not create an entire hub featuring Muppets with Celebrities? Enjoy!
Diana Ross guest stars on The Muppet Show singing “Reach Out and Touch Someone” during Season 4 (1979-1980).
Norah Jones guest stars on Sesame Street singing "Don’t Know Why ‘Y' Didn’t Come" during Season 35.
Patti LaBelle guest stars on The Muppet Show singing ”The Alphabet Song,” in rousing gospel style.
Tony Bennett guest stars on The Muppet Show singing “I Believe in Little Things.”
Andrea Bocelli guest stars on The Muppet Show and sings Elmo to sleep during Season 36. Elmo is almost as big a star as Andrea.
Muppets Resembling Celebrities or is it the Other Way Around?
My fourth idea
Instead of a hub about celebrities with Muppets, I had this brilliant flash of inspiration. Why not create a hub that features celebrities who look like Muppets? Here are some funny comparisons of celebrities and their respective Muppet look-alikes.
The Muppet Show
My fifth idea
The Muppets are so fascinating, why don't I write a hub about Jim Henson, creator of these long-lived puppets? For example, I could start the hub with:
Jim Henson created the show, “Sam and Friends,” in 1955 for a local Washington, D.C. television station. His energetic Muppets soon became a popular fixture, and began to appear on national TV variety shows.
In 1969, Henson participated in a ground-breaking educational show for television, “Sesame Street.” The popularity of Big Bird, the Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, Ernie and Bert soon made the Muppets the stars of the show. Over the years, the Muppet cast has grown to include many new puppets including Count von Count, Mr. Snuffleupagus, the Swedish Chef, and Elmo who stars in his own segment, “Elmo’s World.”
In 1976, Henson created his signature project – “The Muppet Show," a weekly prime-time variety show filled with songs, skits and talented celebrity guest stars. The host is charming Kermit the Frog who presides over a motley crew of performers, including the diva, Miss Piggy; hopeful comic, Fozzie Bear; daredevil Gonzo; and the two old cranky guys in the balcony, Statler and Waldorf. Remind you of familiar hotels?
The Muppet Show cast has appeared in a number of movies, including "The Muppet Movie, The Great Muppet Caper, The Muppet Christmas Carol'" and "The Muppets Take Manhattan."
In the 1980s, Henson created new worlds -- the magical underground civilization of "Fraggle Rock," the imagination-filled nursery of "Muppet Babies," and the fantasy worlds of "The Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth." Henson's creations live on beyond his death in 1990, and new offerings featuring his Muppets are continually being produced by the company he founded.
My sixth idea
You guessed it. This is where my diverse and sometimes hard-to-fathom ideas and brilliant (?) thoughts led me. Let me summarize for you: 1) I could write a hub about the funny but faux parody. 2) Or a hub about Julie Andrews and her Muppets gig. 3) Or a hub about celebrities singing in videos with various and sundry Muppets. 4) Or a hub about celebrities looking like Muppets. 5) Or a hub about Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets. 6) Or my sixth idea - create this hub describing in detail all the six actual, assorted ideas for different hubs that provided the inspiration and material for the creation of “How to Find New Topics for Hubs.” Now it's up to you. Go forth and procreate. Oops! I mean, create!
Caution: Be aware that following the path I have described for the synthesis of creative composition may lead to complete and utter destruction of your mental health.

This is delightful!
How ingenious to make a hub about making them out of such a variety of things that all come together wonderflly.
It was fun to wander along the self-propelled path of poking around for subjects, them poking you around, and entertaining us all the way with a certain tongue-in-cheek, mischievous frivolity. Could have been dry as the proverbial bone but you made it juicy instead!
I don't exactly look for ideas, but a word or phrase may catch my attention, I jot it down or create a wordpad with just it as a title but no content (unless I happen to have thought of some) which I file in a folder just for such ideas. I call the folder "Hubworthy" even though they all aren't.
Then I may be fixing breakfast or doing something else & a lot of ideas about it just push their way to the surface and I run and start writing them on the file which had no previous content.
Or something that's been formulating inside finally rises to consciousness & I start a wordpad for it, writing whatever flows till it begins to seem like it might blossom - or not.
Once I begin writing seriously, it takes a lot of editing to fix it. Being half-blind, I don't see typos until I see the previews, which I go back to editing more. Then I let it lanquish a bit before coming back to it to see if I really want to publish it and usually notice that it needs still more editing and surgery. And still they're most often too long! haha
What a very thorough account of finding or deciding upon topics that can be rendered into hubs. I rarely struggle with ideas. If ever. There's a whole world of wonderfulness constantly surrounding us: science, nature, countries, cultures, history, people, media, products, events, destinations and more.
Each has it's own myriad of sub-topics that can be explored and uncovered, layers peeled back, peeked at and investigated - or not. That part depends upon the flavor and color of your onion :)
Another wonderful hub drbj :)
Love the way you describe your thought processes, It's so like my own. My first idea and final result is poles apart.I thought I was mad, glad to hear I am not alone. Thanks for sharing
I'm afraid I don't have a couch. However - I do possess the ability to provide a glassy-eyed stare that doctors generally adopt when the patient is doing the talking.
I have 'feigning interest' down to a fine art. My personal tool box brimmeth over ;)
Oh yeah and I should have inserted into my first comment 'and in the event I do struggle, I don't get writer's block. I just make something up. And hope no-one notices'.
For me there is a dichotomy in my decision aking the breaks in this thought: do I aim for things I am interested in and want to write about that no one else may want to read, or do I sell out to a Google Adwords confinement where all my articles are driven by potential page views?
I expect the answer to this lies in my personal preference. I truly wish to create an interesting article to me and potential readers that will gain a lot of traffic.
Thanks for your formula, I will refer to it on the days my creative well runs dry.
Love the Muppets! And I think I like how you think..from one topic to anohter to another to another..
anyway I get a lot of my ideas for hubs from Yahoo answers..
Great ideas, and since we all need an ever constant flow of ideas to keep it all rolling along, invaluable. :)
Great hub, I just write about my life experiences, I want to get them down before I loss my mind...LOL Thanks for a thumbs up hub
Good Doc bj - Oh my! Your article and its pix were tops. Brought back several fun, but diverse memories for me. I have a good friend who served as one of the "extras" in the movie, Hawaii (he was one of the ones who climbed the masts on that large 4-rigger). As I recollect, he said that while there he spent a bit of time conversing with Julie Andrews, and he told me what a fine lady she was - nice to all and polite to everyone. As to the Muppets, they almost killed me one time. I was done with some bigtime surgery and my belly was in constant pain. The ward folks put up a TV and there was Kermit the Frog making like a cowboy. I had to cover my head with a pillow so that I would no longer see nor hear the TV show. I laughed so hard that it hurt more than ever. So... thanks for the article. I really liked it a lot.
Gus :-)))
Oooooo drbj - you said wayyyyy too many eff words *gasps*
You know, I wrote a Muppety hub once. Probably buried now. Snowed under with utter nonsense. *wanders off - thinking about sensible things. Like how to find new topics*
"Where would Hubbers be without ideas? Where would Hubpages be without Hubbers without ideas? Where would anyone be without ideas? I have no idea!"
A conundrum if I ever saw one. lol. :)
Well drbj, I think Julie stole the idea of doing an AARP parody of "My Favorite Things" from my Pet Peeves Hub. The nerve of that woman!
LOL. This is a fun Hub as are all of your inspired writings!
It is very interesting how you choose the topic of your hubs, and I like the way you think, I am more of a researcher so when I decide upon a topic I usually just kind of following the HUBMOB, the ^challenge put in HP, there are times I am interested in a topic and I challenge myself that I can do it with little idea about it, then I conduct my own reading,
And I like the muppet shows with those persobalities, I like the Sesame portion beofre where they sing with personalities. Thank you dr, youre amazing with your ideas, Maita
As I read this hub, man oh man do you have some awesome ideas, which I would say Juile Andrews intrigues me teh most, but muppets I love!
Okay back down to earth. I"ve never said I didn't but I get many of my ideas from other hubber questions in teh answers seciton of hubpages. While my writing hubs get me mroe traffic outside of hubpages, my other hubs if interlinked get that added traffic, but they get people from hubpages, which is teh focus of it anyways.
I thoroughly enjoyed this whimsical Hub. It was quite a journey and great fun. Thank you for providing this pleasure.
My journalism prof used to say, "Ideas are in the air", to which one smart-alek replied, "I thought that was smog."
"See, there you go," he responded.
Good hub.
What a clever hub. I've been amazed and sometimes surprised by the topics I've chosen to write about. Generally speaking, they are about subjects with which I'm familiar. Although, occasionally I really enjoy researching things I know little about. I've actually learned a lot from writing hubs, which I love. I enjoy learning and the mental stimulation. Thanks for taking us through your process, it was inspirational!
What a great hub with so many ideas. It is so lighthearted and I really enjoyed this read. Thanks.
This is great, while I have always loved the muppets, my niece is only one and she has this weird obsession with Elmo :p
Going to follow you to see what other odd topics you come up with lol
Great stuff I was looking for some new ideas other than market crashes, oil spills and bailouts :) I need some happy tunes!
This was a lot of fun drbj. Your humor shines through, as always. I found myself smiling because I can so relate! I don't have a problem with ideas, I have a problem with choosing one, and then making it worth while to read.
LOL drbj, I am certainly aware of this phenomenon, I must deal with it every day. It is a pleasure to find someone of like mind who understands! :)
I need a few ideas on new topics, I get bored at times writing about tattoos ; )
Hey DR BJ:
lol
I'm starting to think "I better keep commenting on your hubs cause you will always comment back,"right?!
I love the idea of writing reviews on books, movies, etc to monetize......(Bing: $$$$$$'signs in my head LOL
Come back to my hubs!! take care
I like your creative angle, I like the gut bit of instinct as well. Love the delightful way you create. My fave was Norah, just fantastic. Thanks :)
This was a wonderful trip down your own path toward creating a hub. One thing leads to another, our interest sparked by something else along the way. Such fun and productive as well! I like to hit on something and develop a mini obsession, run with it until that new idea pops up and then take another turn onto another path.
A most enjoyable, informative and heck of alot of fun hub! You think like I do, or I think like you do for the creation of a new hub topic. In any case, this is good reading. I want to be a student of yours! :-)
Hi drbj, it is fascinating thinking about the process of writing these hubs. Writers block is something that i experienced after spending six years at a writer's club. I just hit a brick wall and put my stuff in a box in a cupboard. Then Ernest from Ernestshub informed me about Hubpages. So far i have managed to keep on track as writing is so creative and rewarding. Another category you could add is finding an excuse to attempt a bit of humour. You would fit that category nicely, as other hubbers do too. It was such a tragedy that Julie Andrews had her career cut short, as she sang so beautifully. Your insightful comments may come in handy if that brick wall suddenly appears in front of my pen, or keyboard. Cheers
You didn't mention several singers on the Muppet Show, including, Linda Ronstat, John Denver, Alice Cooper, Mac Davis. A very good hub though.
Awesome hub! Very interesting how one idea leads to another and another.
I love the way you stumble upon ideas for hubs. For me it was a matter of a phone call to a relative. They would tell me about their day, or a funny joke. Soon this would spark an idea or two, which would lead to more. Before long, I would have a notebook full of ideas. Thanks for sharing your ideas!

Julie Andrews is perfect for the Muppets. I remember a very odd moment when Elton John sang Goodbye Yellow Brick Road with the Muppets, and if I recall correctly, the Muppets were playing musical instruments.
You accurately categorize the creative process and Hubber's Hubs. I have been getting topics out of the newspapers lately, but I like to mix up topics as much as I can. (My sports stuff bores the daylights out of other hubbers but brings in most of my non-hub traffic--my TV and movie hubs get little from the outside. I like to write about both...)
It will be interesting to see what your next topic will be.
