Math Equation for Success in Life
This information should be required reading for all high school students before they graduate. Why? Because adhering to the following mathematical equation will help you achieve your goals in business and in life. From a strictly mathematical viewpoint, think about this:
What makes 100%? What does it mean to give MORE than 100%? Ever wonder about those people who say they are giving more than 100%? What does that really mean? Have you ever been to a meeting or a conference where someone, perhaps your boss or the president of the company, asks you to give over 100%? Maybe, even 110%?

That got me to thinking (I've been known to do that from time to time), what actually makes up that 100% we are supposed to give in life?
Here's a little mathematical formula that might help you answer these questions:
Think of the letters in the alphabet represented as numbers:
A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26.
Then:
H-A-R-D-W-O-R-K
8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11 = 98%
And
K-N-O-W-L-E-D-G-E
11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5 = 96%
But
A-T-T-I-T-U-D-E
1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5 = 100%.
Isn't that a great example? Your attitude is 100% of everything you do.
On the other hand:
B-U-L-L-S-*-*-T
2+21+12+12+19+8+9+20 = 103%
And look how far a** kissing will take you.
A-*-*-K-I-S-S-I-N-G
1+19+19+11+9+19+19+9+14+7 = 118%
So, one can conclude with mathematical certainty that while HARD WORK and KNOWLEDGE will get you close, and ATTITUDE will get you there, it's the BULLS**T and A** KISSING that will put you over the top and guarantee your success.
I know what you're thinking. You don't want to use those last two behaviors in order to succeed. Okay. Let me put it this way. In addition to having that 100% positive attitude in order to succeed, you better sharpen up your politically correct behavior as well. You may not label it as I have but it is definitely what you should employ when the boss asks you after delivering his too wordy, too long, and too boring lecture to the troops: "Well, what did you think of my speech?"
During your pursuit of success it's an asset also to be considered intelligent. Here is a very simple test to gauge your Intellect. Play this video and answer the question. It should not be difficult. The pre-school students who were given this same simple test had no problem coming up with the correct answer.

Don't beat yourself up if you couldn't figure it out. Sometimes only the most unsophisticated and naive minds, like those of five-year-olds, can understand such puzzles.
That's what I keep telling myself since I didn't have the correct answer the first time I saw the video. Of course, the entry door is on the right side of the vehicle facing forward. We knew that. But who is to say that the bus isn't backing up?
But now we have an opportunity to redeem ourselves. Take a look at the following video. Only 55% of 100 people who read the words will understand them. What does that mean?
Simple. If you understand them, you are one of the 55%!

Of course attitude is 100% - it's what a person brings to every thing going on within and every interpretation of what's going on without oneself. As you say - it is in effect and control whether or not we're aware of it. It's so intrinsic and central to a person's awareness, in fact, it's easy to confuse this ever-present subjectivity with objective "universal truth" as many people seem to. Trouble erupts when more than one subjective "universe" collides with another (out of the jillions roaming the Earth) in disagreement as to the objective universal truths! ;)
As to the "politically correct" ingredients, unfortunately in some areas of human interaction, those attitudes too often are the ones rewarded. It's nice to be retired from hose areas, isn't it?
I prefer the more "correct" attitudes of tolerance and honesty - but my career record may be testimony to their failure to achieve success those others more often do!

ps - perhaps I should have said that tolerance and honesty may be more "correct" ethically or morally, but are surely less "politically" so! hehe
Hello, hello. Yes, you are correct. Attitude IS 100% of all that we do. And I was also trying to show that the last two behaviors may not be the "right" ones but are often the expedient ones in many business environments.
Each one of us has the privilege of choosing to use them or not.

Hi Good Doctor bj - I gave you at least 150% for this article, mostly because it was so mathematically precise about words so commonly used in toting stuff up for these analyses...
I thought about prior civilizations and attempted to apply your methods and reasoning to their written "alphabets." That did not work out very well. (What mathematical values can be assigned to hieroglyphic characters such as birds, fish, cats, and things like those?)
Then I got to thinking some more. Aha! That is what they are using in Washington. No wonder it is all such a mess.

Congratulations, Gus, you have discovered the reason for all the DC confusion. We know they are using different standards for thinking. Intelligence is out. Verbosity is in - especially from teleprompters.
But now, thanks to your out-of-the-box thinking, I have to agree. They must be using a different alphabet. After dissing Arizona's courageous move to enforce federal laws already on the books, Pelosi and Holder confessed they hadn't read them. How could they? Their alphabet must be different.

Although I thought I was writing this hub tongue in cheek, I must state I am not an advocate of brain-washing, oops, I mean MLM techniques. I am not advocating devious means like the bull and the kissing techniques.
I am merely stating the facts. In a corporate, or any other team environment, you and I both know that those behaviors exist and whether one chooses to use them or not is a matter of personal choice and one's as you so aptly put it, "professional intelligent attitude."

This was wonderful! I've never seen a formula for success so simply and brilliantly stated. I think I'm jealous--I wish I had thought of this! Behind the numbers, you are correct--it isn't enough to play the game--how you play it is watched and noticed. For better or worse.
I need to get to bed, but instead I will likely spend some time examining a numerical equivalent of many, many words.

After a number of years working with wannabe managers (the PC term for them is "emerging" managers), I realized that sometimes their behavioral knowledge didn't quite measure up to their professional or technical skills. So the "attitude is 100%" came into play.

In life sometimes we wish that we can use a calculator to accurately compute everything but that is not how it should be.
I love the bus video.
Speaking of calculators, PaperNotes, many school systems allow students to use calculators for math problems, and I'm afraid generations of children will be growing up with little to no math skills. Imagine them trying to figure out how much their bill should be in a store or restaurant when they forget their calculator. Or trying to reconcile a checkbook - many of them today don't have a clue about how to do that.
