Would You Live in Pee Pee?
Would You Live in Pee Pee?
I can almost hear your response: “What the #%&$ are you talking about?”
Well, let me put it this way. Would you be embarrassed to tell people if you lived in Mianus? … in Connecticut?
Then think about how you might feel if you made your home in Pee Pee … in Pike County, Ohio?
Almost 7,900 folks do live in Pee Pee Township right now.
I know you will be interested to learn that Pee Pee is well watered by Pee Pee Creek. In fact, that is how it got its name.
The creek was named for an early resident of the area who settled there in the late 18th century.
Some Pee Pee-ans insist that fellow was named Peter Patrick.
Others claim his name was Paul Paine.
In any event, Peter or Paul carved his initials in the trunk of a large beech tree growing by the creek. In time, P.P. became Pee Pee.
The flag of Pee Pee Township features a bushel of wheat inspired by the seal of Ohio, Pee Pee Creek, a buckeye (horse chestnut tree), and the initials of the town’s namesake.
I learned that community-owned vehicles are unmarked and have no name painted on them. Perhaps this indicates that the residents don’t find the name of their town as funny as we do.
Yet a service station located in Pee Pee is proud to sell bumper stickers proclaiming: ‘I got gas in Pee Pee, Ohio.’
Did I mention that Pee Pee Township which lies on the Scioto River has rich bottom lands?
And Pee Pee is the wealthiest township in Pike County since it contains Waverly, the county seat.
Just in case you think I may be making this all up, take a look at this YouTube video.
On the weather map, look for Chillicothe with Pee Pee underneath. (laughing)
Pee Pee, Ohio Video
Did you know that Pike County and the town of Piketon were named after Zebulon Montgomery Pike, a US explorer who discovered a high peak in the Rocky Mountains in 1807 later named Pike's Peak? He served as a brigadier general in the War of 1812.
Footnote:
If you’re wondering where Chillicothe got its name, it is derived from the Shawnee Indian words, ‘Chala-ka-tha,’ meaning home of the principal chief of the Shawnee people.
That name is exotic but not quite as provocative as Pee Pee.
Speaking of Pee Pee, if you do have the opportunity to visit, watch out for flash floods!
